Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
